Green Belt wins GOLD medal in National Baking Competition
(From 'Hawkes Bay Today' news media 25 July 2012)
Hawke's Bay bakers have again scored well at the annual Bakels Supreme Pie Awards - taking away 11 prizes from seven of the 12 categories.
Awards included two golds for the commercial/wholesale and steak, veges and gravy categories, and three silvers for mince and gravy, chicken and vegetable, and bacon and egg. Gold award-winning John's Bakery & Cafe owner John van den Berk said the secret to the national dish was passion.
"You've just got to be passionate about what you're doing on the day and have a drive to succeed," he said. "I'm passionate about baking and making an impressive pie."
Big winners included Havelock North's Jackson's Bakery & Cafe who were awarded in four categories, and Flaxmere's Hollies Bakery who won in three.
Jackson's owner Neville Jackson said the key to good pies was quality ingredients
"You have got to use the best ingredients and have a lot of patience to make the pastry," he said. "It's something you can't rush. You also need to use good quality meat and have a passion about it."
Hawke's Bay has a long history of winning at the awards, and Judge and Bakels executive chairman Duncan Loney said local bakers were "keeping up their reputation".
"Hawke's Bay has been the most successful region over the years of pie awards," he said. "You have some very good bakers who have done extremely well at the pie awards and they have done pretty well this year.
"The Hawke's Bay bakers are keeping up their reputation and doing very, very well indeed."
The overall winner was a gingered peach and pear with Cointreau pie, made by Viands Bakery in Kihikihi, Te Awamutu. Owners of the bakery, Shane and Kathy Kearns, are the daughter and son-in-law of long-term winners, the Osler's baking dynasty in Wairoa.
The awards came after judging of more than 4500 entries from over 400 bakeries.

He sparred with the world tallest (2 metres tall), and the world’s strongest (broke 3 black and 1 white board with a reverse knife-hand minutes before – that’s 9 inches of timber), and survived.
